gastric band is a type of weight loss surgery that allows those that have a high level of body fat to lose weight in a medical procedure that binds the top most portion of the stomach with a thin silicone banding which regulates the amount of food that gets into the stomach, thus, giving that food a longer time to digest. This makes body fat go way down, however; it is not a procedure that just anyone can go through. To be able to get this particular brand of obesity surgery, an individual must have a BMI, or body mass index of a certain number, usually no less than 35-40. This makes it so it cannot be used for vanity.
Though it is a relatively safe procedure and safe way to lose weight that one may need to for medical reasons, it is not a procedure that is recommended if at all possible. Furthermore, it is not a procedure that is recommended for people with certain current conditions or states of health. Pregnancy is a perfect example. If a person that is pregnant has or will have a gastric band at any point during the pregnancy, she must have the optimal level of nutrient intake. If the woman does not eat everything that she needs to nurture herself and the baby, it can endanger both lives.
In many cases, immediately following known conception, a deflation of the silicone band may be necessary. In the case of planned conception, the parents would be wise to have the band deflated beforehand. This band implanted for this weight loss surgery should remain deflated during the pregnancy and remain off until after breast feeding is complete. After this, the band may be re-inflated by means of an obesity surgery to assist the postpartum weight loss needed.
